Hypersonic Models product risk assessment
General remarks applicable to all products:
Hypersonic Models’ products are not toys. They are parts for making static display scale models. The parts in these products can be very small and fragile and are not intended or designed for mechanical functionality, motorisation or movement. Their strength and material properties are consistent with their intended use for static display scale models only.
The products are intended for experienced scale modellers/hobbyists of 14 years of age. Due to the small parts, keep the sets out of reach of small children under 3 years of age.
The instruction sheets provided in the sets advise clearly of proper handling and use of the parts.
No paint or glue or other chemicals are included.
When using paint or glue, work in a well ventilated area and/or use a respirator for organic vapours.
Product categories:
· “Detail Sets“
· “Decals / Masks“
· “Kits“
“Detail sets” (SKU: HMR xxxxx):
Detail Sets may contain cast resin, 3D printed resin, injection molded plastic, photo etched metal (brass), masking vinyl and other small metal parts.
Cast and 3D printed parts are made from liquid resins that are hazardous in their raw, liquid form (Hypersonic Models retains the manufacturers’ data sheets of the various materials used in the manufacturing process), but become chemically inert, solid plastics after curing.
Hypersonic Models ensures strict quality control to guarantee un- or undercured parts never enter distribution. Parts that are improperly cured are apparent in their soft, or waxy or chalky texture, mushy/fuzzy detail, liquid oozing from the surface. As every single part, even the smallest, is handled and inspected by necessity (those made by 3D printers as well as those made by resin casting), control is integrated into the manufacturing process itself and it is very highly unlikely for parts with such defects to reach customers.
Injection moulded plastic (styrene) is a thermoplastic that is chemical inert and solid at normal temperatures (up to ca. 200°C) and poses no risk at exposure.
All resin and plastic parts undergo another visual check upon packaging.
Caution:
Resin dust from sanding and cutting can be harmful when inhaled. It is advised to wear a dust breathing mask and/or sand wet.
In rare cases, very prolonged direct contact with even fully cured 3D printed resin may lead to skin sensitization and/or irritation. Wear protective gloves (such as nitrile) while working.
While the majority of parts are manufactured directly in-house in the Hypersonic Models workshop, some components (some cast resin items, photo-etched metal, injection molded plastic parts) are manufactured by third-party, professional manufacturers (contacts available upon request). While they themselves perform quality control of their parts, Hypersonic Models performs an additional level of quality control between delivery and packaging.
“Decals and masks” (SKU: HMD xxxxx and HMM xxxxx):
Decals are paper products with printed inks and a weak, dry, harmless adhesive (water soluable). Although there is practically no risk, it is still advisable to keep these away from young children (below 3) to avoid any potential choking risk.
Masks are vinyl sheet material with an adhesive backing. The overall risk is again very low, although the choking risk is slightly higher as the material is a stronger than decals and is not soluable.
Decals and masks are manufactured by third party, professional suppliers (contacts available on request) with a double layer of quality control (at the manufacturer and at Hypersonic Models).
“Kits” (SKU: HMK xxxx):
Kits contain parts for the construction of static display scale models. Kits may contain some or all of the contents of “Detail Sets” and “Decals and Masks” and the same risk assessments as well as manufacturing details apply.
